Obituary

Dr. George Joseph Goodreau Jr., 85, passed away on Thursday, October 06, 2016 at his home. Dr. Goodreau was born March 18, 1931 in Haverhill, Massachusetts to George Joseph and Ruth Marie Richards Goodreau. He grew up in Rye Beach, New Hampshire and earned his BA degree in 1953 from St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. After graduating, he served five years in the United States Navy as a navigator and operations officer aboard ship as well as an instructor at Officer's Candidate School in Newport, RI. In 1962 he obtained his D.D.S. degree from Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. While attending dental school he was president of the Gorgas Odontological Honor Society and the recipient of the Harry Kelsey Award for Professional Demeanor as well as the International College of Dentists first annual award for Outstanding Achievement. Upon entering private practice in Panama City, Dr. Goodreau was very involved in professional dental organizations. He was a member of the American College of Dentists, and was a fellow of the International College of Dentists and of the Academy of General Dentistry. He also served as president of the Florida AGD, the Bay County Dental Society and the Northwest Florida Dental Society. He served in all offices of the Florida Dental Association and was its 99 th president in 1982-83. His civic activities included: director of the Rotary Club, board member of Panama City Music Association, the Bay County Chamber of Commerce, the Knights of Columbus, St. John PTA President, and local Little League baseball. Dr. Goodreau was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Richard Goodreau. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gloria Lawson Goodreau; three children; Dr. Melanie Goodreau Walters, Dr. George J. "Trey" Goodreau, III, and Dr. Gregory Goodreau; five grandchildren; Christopher Walters, Mary Elizabeth Walters, Catherine Walters, Hunter Goodreau, and Kristen Wolfe; two sisters; Elaine Schaake and Ruth Ann Harris, two brothers; Gerard Goodreau and Duane Goodreau, numerous nieces and nephews, and by a very special family friend, Pinnie Hunter. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday October 10, 2016 at 1 pm at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Father Kevin McQuone officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4-6 pm at Wilson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Hospice or the Arthritis Foundation in his memory.
