George Mims Cox, surrounded by his loving family, passed away peacefully at his home in Wewahitchka, Florida on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at the age of 84. George was born October 4, 1937 in Donalsonville, Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fitzhugh and Florence Cox and by his brothers Fitzhugh H. Cox, Jr. and Richard A. (Dickie) Cox.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife of sixty-one years, Evelyn Stephan Cox, his daughter Stephanie C. Wade and husband Algy, and his son Brian F. Cox and wife Tonya. He is also survived by his grandchildren Stephen Price (Stacey), Remington Wade (Megan), Zachary Cox (Adria), Justin Haddock, Brook Haddock, and Andrea Prescott. Great-grandchildren include Gabriella Price, Grayson Price, Benjamin Cox, and Sadie Haddock. He is also survived by his special friend and caretaker Ladonya Millender.
George grew up in Panama City, Florida where he graduated from Bay High School in 1955. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Troy State University and a Master's degree from the University of Mississippi, both in Business Education.
George had a long and noteworthy career in education. He taught at Wewahitchka High School for forty years, retired, and continued to serve the students as an elected and certified member of the Gulf County School Board for ten years during which time he became a part of the Master Board for School Boards. George also served on the Board of Directors for the Florida School Board Association where his expertise and experience in education proved invaluable. His dedication to the students of Gulf County is undeniable and continues to be appreciated.
George also managed the Gulf Teachers Credit Union from 1963 until it merged with the Papermakers Credit Union in 1985. He later served on the Board of Directors of Emerald Coast Federal Credit Union.
Until his passing, George remained an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Wewahitchka. Over the years, he served on the Administrative Board, Trustee, Treasurer, Building Committee, and as an usher.
George's hobbies and interests included coin & currency collecting, stamp collecting, and flower gardening as he had an appreciation for all things beautiful and unique. While George loved flowers immensely, he also enjoyed seeing his church home be an integral part of the community.
Serving as active pallbearers are Justin Smith, Billy Childress, Jerry Pridgeon, Billy Hoover, Danny Little and Houston Whitfield.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 1, 2021 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM Central Time at the First United Methodist Church of Wewahitchka, FL. The service will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at 11:00 AM Central Time at the First United Methodist Church of Wewahitchka, FL. Interment following the service at Buckhorn Cemetery, Brian Setterich Road, Wewahitchka, FL. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Steeple Fund of the First United Methodist Church of Wewahitchka, P. O. Box 265, Wewahitchka, FL 32465.
