1940 - 2012
George E. "Gunny" Bell, 72, of Chipley, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2012. He was born May 4, 1940 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Walter & Martha Bell. George grew up in Midlothian, Virginia. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1957 – 1977. He worked as a Navy Science Instructor at Port St. Joe High School teaching Navy ROTC from 1978 – 1981. George was also instrumental in starting the ROTC program at Mosley High School, where he later taught the program from 1981 – 1992. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who will be greatly missed. George enjoyed his family, friends and was proud to be a Marine. Mr. Bell is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Cheryl Bell; daughter, Rose Waddell (Chuck Tate); son, Sam Bell (Kim); three grandchildren, Dalton, Lane, Trenten; nephew, David Bell (Gayle), niece, Linda Hietpas; dear friend, Doug Waddell (Alana); and his faithful dog, Corky. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Covenant Hospice, 107 W 19th Street, Panama City, FL 32405 or to the American Cancer Society, 4001 W 23rd Street, Suite C, Panama City, FL 32405 in memory of George Bell. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Covenant Hospice of Panama City for all their care and support.
