Obituary

GARY L. GREENBERG

Gary L. Greenberg, 52, of Panama City, passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2013. He was born April 4, 1961 in Fort Lee, Virginia, the son of Lt. Col (AF) Hank Greenberg and Celia Greenberg. He was also raised by loving step-parents Sharon Greenberg and Lt. Col (AF) Chuck Floyd.
He was predeceased by his father, Hank Greenberg and step-mother, Sharon Greenberg. He is survived by his mother, Celia W. Floyd and step-father, Chuck Floyd, two brothers, Rob Floyd (Darlene) and Glen Greenberg (Kelly), two sisters, Jan Floyd and Kori Greenberg (Mitch) and long time family friend Terri Gainer. He is also survived by nephew, Pfeifer Floyd and niece, Delaney Greenberg, good friends Bonnie Stith and Richard Wilcox who have been a great help and cared for Gary through the late stages of cirrhosis and alcohol addiction.
Gary was a happy baby and child. He walked with his head in the clouds, his eyes to the sky and his feet to the beat of a different drum.
He started first grade at Holy Nativity Episcopal Day School in 1967, attended school in California and Spain and Mosley High School. He received his GED in Austin, Texas in 1981. He was baptized in the Episcopal Church. He had many years of experience as a seaman off-shore for Southern Transportation and Marine Transportation.
Everyone who really knew Gary often said "he would give you the shirt off his back". He not only did that, but also offered a roof over quite a few homeless and sometimes sick people who he always called friends. He was truly a non-materialistic person, who always put other people first before himself.
He died after many battles with his illness and he was always kept in the prayers of many people, especially the ones from St. Thomas by the Sea. They were a constant source of spiritual guidance for the family. Special thanks to Margarette Vaust, Elena Rowland and Mary Carney.
"There comes an end to all things bright and beautiful", but then there comes more beautiful, new babies, flowers and rainbows that make this a wonderful world.
Gary should be remembered as a very unselfish and kind person, not as the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personalities than can result from severe alcoholism.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday December 21, 2013 at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas by the Sea, corner of Magnolia Lane and 1st Street, Laguna Beach.
In place of flowers, please consider giving a donation to Covenant Hospice 107 W. 19th St Panama City, FL 32405.
