IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Florence Sue
Curtis Cameron Miller
September 18, 1929 – April 8, 2022
Florence Sue Curtis Cameron Miller passed away peacefully at home on April 8, 2022. She was born September 18, 1929 in Hattiesburg Mississippi. Sue exhibited what we in the family called the "Curtis Gene". When faced with adversity, she and those in her family also blessed with this trait, arose to the challenge rather than allowing the challenge to define their actions. Her mother passed away early in her childhood, and soon after her father fell victim to rheumatoid arthritis. Yet, with the help of an Angel by the name of Tessie, she was able to complete her secondary education while caring for her father. She then chose to pursue a college education in nursing at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans. Remarkably, she took physics and was the only female in the class and proudly earned the only 'A'! She then worked as a nurse at Charity Hospital. It was there that, when she was coming off shift, she encountered a man bleeding on the sidewalk. She recognized him as a stabbing victim and assisted this individual into the ER and is credited with saving the life of this person.
During her stay in New Orleans, she met Bob Cameron, who coincidentally was also raised in Hattiesburg, though they had not met as he was a few years older. When Dr. Cameron pursued a fellowship in New York, Sue made a career change and became the first nurse anesthetist at Forrest General Hospital in her hometown of Hattiesburg. Dr. Bob Cameron, having completed his fellowship, expended considerable energy tracking her down again and eventually married Sue. They produced three children, Robbie, Mary, and Curt.
Unfortunately, Dr. Cameron passed away in 1993. Sue met, and eventually married Charlie Miller. They enjoyed many years of travel, good food, and golf together. Sue's care-giver facet was thrust back into action as she became primary caregiver during Charlie's battle with dementia.
Sue Miller was a lover of animals. The household maintained an equilibrium of three dogs and three cats for years.
Sue was an excellent bridge player, having learned at an early age from a Grand Master. This might be interesting news to the Panama Country Club Bridge Group which provided her many enjoyable Thursday afternoons.
Sue was an avid golfer and a member of Panama Country Club for 56 years. She got into golf because her son, Robbie, desired to play and they both took lessons together. Robbie might be a more avid golfer than she, but she holds the distinction of out-numbering the hole-in-one total over him by a 3-0 margin.
Sue was the first HOA secretary at Country Club Harbor Estates (Panama Country Club).
Sue was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. Robert Cameron, her second husband, Charles Miller, her son, William Curtis Cameron, and a brother, William A. Curtis, Jr. She is survived by her son, Dr. Robert Cameron, her daughter, Mary Cameron Hulgan, and son in law, Jim Hulgan.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at 2:30 pm at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, officiated by Father Steve Bates. A post-service reception will be held at the home of the Hulgans, in Lynn Haven.
