EVELYN JONES NEWBERRY
Funeral services will be held at two o'clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 for Mrs. Evelyn Jones Newberry, 91, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 25, 2009. The family will receive friends at Wilson Funeral Home for one hour beginning at one o'clock on Tuesday, January 27, prior to the service at two o'clock. Private interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Newberry, the third of four daughters, was born to Christian parents, William Thomas and Marie Clendinen Jones, on October 12, 1917, in Dothan, Alabama. After her marriage to Dr. Grant Theodore Newberry on March 20, 1937, Evelyn moved to Panama City to join her husband who had established his optometric practice in October of 1936. Dr. Newberry was the founder of Newberry Optometric Clinic, which was in business for more than 60 years. The couple resided in the same home since 1939 and were married for 55 years before Dr. Newberry's death in 1992.
Mrs. Newberry was the mother of two daughters, Jan Newberry Cooley (deceased), and Gayle Newberry Swatts. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in downtown Panama City, a sustaining member of the Junior Service League, and co-founded the Child Service Center in 1951. She was a homemaker, very active in her church, a member of Bonnie Spears' Sunday school class and attended her dear friend, Vivian Moore's Bible class since 1972.
Her husband, Ted, daughter, Jan, and sister, Marie Louise Rogers, preceded Evelyn in death. She is survived by two sisters, Marjorie Jones Dowling and Nell Jones Poyner; a daughter, Gayle Newberry Swatts, and son-in-law, Higdon Swatts, all of Panama City; two granddaughters, Jan Mitchell Johnson of Houston, Texas and Paula Mitchell Brahan of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; step-grandchildren, Stone Swatts of Panama City and Dana Swatts of Atlanta, Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Asked to serve as pallbearers for Mrs. Newberry are Jimmy Poyner, Jim Poyner, Matt Poyner, Russell Poyner, Tommy Rogers, Ethan Rogers, and Michael Dowling.
Honorary pallbearers are Bobby Davis, Sonny Myers, Cliff Myers, Dr. Steve Myers, Frasier Myers, Tommy Cooley, Leroy Van, Register "Cuz" Windham, Dr. James Corry, Smitty Stuckey, Earnest Spiva, Dr. Tim Smith, Charles "Chuck" Isler, Fred Isler, and Ellis Fowhand.
