Evelyn Margaret Hess
July 22, 1926 – September 9, 2025
"Up from the grave he arose… He arose a victor from the dark domain, and He lives forever with his saints to reign…" That was Mom's song. That was her story. She told it to anyone who needed to hear it.
Evelyn Hess was a Sunday School teacher and a Bible School teacher for more than 70 years. She taught elementary school children as her Lord directed: "Suffer the little children to come unto me for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." When her children graduated out of her class, they did not graduate from Mrs. Hess. She followed them in their lives, some for more than fifty years. A good shepherd, she never left her sheep.
Mom loved to sing about her Savior. She sang at home. She sang at church. She served as our church's pianist and choir director, and at times, its organist. Her goal was to serve Christ in any was she could. The song that stated her life's goal, which she sang often as she worked around the house and church, was Make Me a Blessing:"…Carry the sunshine where darkness is rife, making the sorrowing glad. Make me a blessing, make me a blessing. Out of my life, may Jesus shine; Make me a blessing, O Savior I pray, make me a blessing to someone today." She lived this song and was a blessing to us and to everyone who was fortunate to have known her.
Mom married her Sunday School crush, Louis. They had four children, each of whom believes they were Mom's favorite: Glenn, Karen, Nancy and Brian. To each she taught the way of the cross—It leads home. Although she has left us for her heavenly home, she went assured that we'll all be together one day. She was a great mom, a great teacher, and a great servant for her Lord.
Thanks Mom.
Evelyn was survived by nine grandchildren, Sarah Hess, Scott Hess, Allison Sitte, Carter Hess, Whitney Hess, Peyton Westcott, Lauren Norman, Dana Lawson and Tori Roberts. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren.
