IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Eugenia Price
Lloyd
March 12, 1941 – December 27, 2020
Eugenia Price Lloyd, 79, of Panama City, Florida, passed away peacefully at home after a long illness while surrounded by family on December 27, 2020.
Eugenia was born on March 12, 1941, in Philippi, West Virginia but grew up in the small town of Wilson, Arkansas, along the Mississippi River near Memphis. Eugenia attended Hendrix College in Arkansas for two years before following in her family's tradition and transferring to Auburn University. At Auburn, Eugenia was a member of the Chi Omega sorority and graduated with a degree in English. While there, Eugenia met and fell in love with an engineering student from Panama City named Rayford, to whom she would remain happily married for 56 years. Though Rayford was undisputedly the love of her life, the precise location of that first fateful meeting was always the subject of lively discussion during family walks across the Auburn campus after home football games -- both parties utterly convinced their version to be correct. However, they did agree on their lifelong love of the Auburn Tigers and were loyal season ticket holders for over 50 years, sitting in the exact same seats for 41 of those years.
After marrying, Rayford and Eugenia moved to Panama City where they have resided ever since. While Rayford took over and expanded the family business Lloyd Pontiac-Cadillac GMC, Eugenia focused her substantial energies on raising their two daughters, Lisa and Sherry, and on her numerous volunteer activities and interests. Eugenia excelled in all things in which she involved herself and devoted countless hours to those organizations in which she took an interest. She was president of the Junior Service League; Chairman of the Northwest Florida Regional Library System; served on the Bay Medical Center Board of Trustees; held various offices in the Colonial Dames and the DAR; taught Sunday School and attended First United Methodist Church; and volunteered countless hours for the benefit of children at the After School Assistance Program (ASAP) and Holy Nativity School; just to name a few.
Always an avid reader and a gifted writer, Eugenia loved nothing more than her daily afternoon routine of sitting in her favorite easy chair with a cup of hot tea, freshly warmed cookies, and a good book. Her love of reading eventually led Eugenia to obtain her Masters Degree at the FSU branch in Panama City and to teach English at Gulf Coast Community College. She was a very active volunteer in the Books Alive event, hosting its Authors' Party for many years. Not surprisingly, she was also a longtime book club member. The fellow members of her club, the FOGEs ("Friends of George Eliot") were some of her dearest friends and their kindness over these last several years was greatly appreciated by the family.
Eugenia also loved to travel. She and Rayford traveled the world, right up until the time of her illness. She was particularly fond of Europe but also adored bareboat sail trips to the Caribbean with her family. She was a consummate entertainer and a gourmet cook, and her chocolate groom's cakes were legendary. She was a devoted wife and mother, and she absolutely adored her five grandchildren. Fiercely intelligent with a sharp sense of humor and a quick wit, her beautiful laugh and smile will be sorely missed by all who had the honor of knowing her.
Eugenia was predeceased by her parents, Charles Dudley and Carlton Tompkins Price, as well as by her brother Charles "Charlie" Dudley Price, III. Eugenia is survived by her husband, Rayford Lowe Lloyd, Jr.; her daughters Lisa Lloyd Hamlin (John) and Sherrill "Sherry" Lloyd Brown (Richard); her grandchildren Rayford "Ford" Joseph Pickert, Eugenia Reade Pickert, Carlton "Callie" Jane Brown, Andrew Williams Brown, and John "Jack" Wesley Hamlin, IV; her sisters in law Kay Lloyd Edwards (Thomas), June Cooper Lloyd, and Victoria Forrest McLendon (Charles); and her many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service for Eugenia will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 2 p.m. in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery with the Reverend Thomas Weller and John Blount officiating. Due to the current pandemic situation, the family will not be receiving friends and family at this time. Those who wish to attend the graveside are respectfully requested to wear a mask for protection of other guests.
Contributions in Eugenia's name may be made to the Bay County Conservancy, P.O. Box 1122, Panama City, FL 32402, or to the charity of your choice. The family extends special thanks to Patrice Hunt, BJ Davidson, Fayon Allen, and the many other people who have cared for Eugenia over these last years.
