ERNEST WISEMAN GREER
On December 30, 2008, Ernest Wiseman "Papa" Greer peacefully departed this life to embark on his eternal journey. He was born in Dickey, North Dakota in 1912 to Joseph Greer and Maggie Pendroy. He grew up in Montgomery, AL and settled here in 1937.
Mr. Greer had a long career in the construction industry, was a skilled carpenter and a life member (55 years) of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Southport for over 40 years; a member of the International Order of Oddfellows Scarlet Lodge #75, for which he served as Secretary-Treasurer for many years; Rebekahs Lodge #35; Amaranth Lodge #28; Harry Jackson Masonic Lodge #314; and Scottish Rite-Panama City Valley.
He loved gardening and history, and was knowledgeable in a seemingly endless number of topics. His strength of character and integrity were evident in all that he did, and this legacy lives on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched. They will remember his keen intellect, his perception and his wisdom, as well as the many stories he told from a lifetime of experiences.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Thetis Peterson Greer, his oldest son, Ernest Wiseman Greer Jr., and his granddaughter, Angela Greer. Survivors include two sisters,
Juanita Norton of Montgomery, AL and Eva Warner of Willard, OH; six children, Mary Greene (Hank) of Kingsport, TN, Phyllis Greer of Lynn Haven, FL, Jennifer Greer of Southport, FL, Joseph Greer of Cantonment, FL, David Greer (Soni) of Vernon, FL and Michael Greer (Jeannie) of Southport, FL; fourteen grandchildren, Richard Greene, Pam Spencer, Rebecca Harter, Ernest W. Greer III, John Greer, Bill Hutchins, Tabby Hutchins, Tammy Hutchins, David Hutchins, Alexandra Deaton, Joseph Greer Jr, Audrey Greer, Effie McKenzie and David Greer Jr; fourteen great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Wilson Funeral Home on Friday, January 2, 2009 from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Southport with Pastor Roy Shortt officiating. Interment will follow at the Old Southport Cemetery.
Asked to serve as pallbearers are his grandsons, Richard Greene, Bill Hutchins, David Hutchins, Ernest Greer III, John Greer, Joseph Greer Jr, and David Greer Jr; and his great-grandson,
Christopher Harter.
