Elva F. Stokes, 79, of Panama City, died on Friday, September 19, 2014. She was born in Oxford, Nebraska. She had lived in Panama City, FL for over 50 years. She was Methodist by faith. She attended and completed business school in Denver, CO and worked as a bookkeeper before marrying and becoming a full-time U.S. Air Force wife and mother. Returned to work in 1974 at what was then International Papermill credit union (Bay Credit Union), retiring in 1989. She had numerous hobbies throughout her life, but she excelled at the piano during her youth and school days. As an USAF wife she belonged to and supported numerous Air Force organizations. She enjoyed bowling and belonged to several bowling leagues, including a ladies and mixed doubles. In addition to taking care of, and supporting, her husband and children she enjoyed sewing, knitting, playing cards, crafting and working in the yard. She loved working with numbers whether playing Bingo, coming within a dollar of the basket of groceries without a calculator, or researching the error(s) and balancing a checkbook, to the penny, that had not been balanced in two years…numbers were her gift! She is survived by her three daughters, Jodene Hall and husband Harold, of Picayune, MS, Alicia Hollomon and husband Melvin, of Panama City, FL, Marsha Bass and husband, Gary, of Athens, AL; one son, Frankie Stokes and wife Angie, of Panama City, FL; six grandchildren, Jason Hall, Alan Hollomon and wife Janet, Heather Hall, Frederic Bass, Andrew Hollomon, Bailey, Kalli and Whitney Stokes; five great grandchildren, Natalie and Macy Hall, Landon and Tanner Rayborn, Jaelyn Hollomon; one sister, Doris Johansen, Great Bend, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe M. Stokes; father, Jonathan "Frank" Sanderson; mother, Inez Sanderson; and one brother, Elton "Jimmy" Wilsey. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 6 – 8 p.m.
