ELVA LORENE POWELL
Elva Lorene (Stone) Powell departed this world, January 25, 2007. Elva was born in Six Mile, South Carolina on May 10, 1924.
Elva was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, Franklin Powell and her beloved son, Jerry F. Powell, Sr.
She leaves a lifetime of memories for her cherished grandson, Jerry F. Powell, Jr., granddaughter-in-law Brooke Powell, daughter-in-law Betty Powell, sisters Helen Smith and Florene Strange. She took special delight in her namesake, great-grandson Caleb Stone Powell.
Elva led a long full life. She worked for Stone Manufacturing for 20 years. In her mid-seventies and bored with retirement, she went to work for McDonalds, where she was considered one of their most valuable employees.
Elva was always on the go. Her retirement years were spent in travel with her husband and included summers on Myrtle Beach, camping trips in the mountains, and a trip to Europe to retrace her husband's World War II battles and campaigns. Grandson Jerry was a constant companion, spending his summers with them. She called him "her jewel"
Elva spent her final months in Panama City, Florida with her grandson and his family. She was loved by all who met her. Her final months were filled with joy and wonderful experiences.
Elva was a dedicated wife, a wonderful mother, and the best grandma anyone could ask for. Through her many struggles with illness and loss, she never complained.
She was a true inspiration and we will miss her greatly.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 29, 2007 in Hill Crest Memorial Gardens, Pickens, South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Elva's name to Covenant Hospice, 107 W. 19th St, Panama City, FL 32405. A special note of thanks to Harvey and Kay Brewton, Rena Slate, Diane Needham, Janet Gray and Chaplain Stephen Johnson for the love and comfort they provided our beloved grandmother.
