Elizabeth Woods Thompson Hughes
Elizabeth Woods Thompson Hughes, 88, of Mexico Beach, Florida, passed from this life into the next on Friday, March 23, 2007. Mrs. Hughes was born in Climax, Georgia, but had lived in this area since 1951. As the first female realtor in Mexico Beach she established, operated and retired as a real estate broker from her company, Elizabeth W. Thompson, Realtor. Mrs. Hughes was an amateur musician from her youth, and she took up oil painting in her forties, specializing in beach scenes. She also enjoyed concerts and plays at the Marina Civic Center, traveling and playing bridge and tripoli with her friends for many years. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the First United Methodist Church of Port St. Joe. In 1998 she was blessed by marrying her beloved H. E. (Ed) Hughes, who made her very happy by his devotion to her. Mrs. Hughes was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth (Arline) and Carl H. Woods, Sr., her brother, Carl H. Woods, Jr., her first husband and father of her children, Charles Emmett Thompson and two nephews. She is survived by her devoted husband, H. E. Hughes, Sr., of Mexico Beach, Fl., her daughter and son-in-law, Carol T. and William J. Rish of Port St. Joe, Fl., her son, Richard E. Thompson of Panama City, Fl., 3 grandchildren, Cathy Rish Womac, Jay Rish and Linda Love Thompson Roberts and 8 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers, William F. Woods and wife, Doris, of Tyrone, Georgia, Harold E. Woods of Loganville, Georgia, and R. Wayne Woods and wife, Carolyn, of Athens, Georgia, as well as 14 nieces and nephews. In addition, she is survived by her husband's children, H.E. Hughes Jr. and wife Kye, Phyllis Stallings and her husband Ronnie, and Donna Roberts and her husband Pat, 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, as well as by many dear friends of long standing. The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church of Port St. Joe on Monday, March 26, 2007 from 5 to 7 p.m. EST. Funeral services will be held at the church on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at 11 a.m. EST with the Rev. Mac Fulcher officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Hill Cemetery.
