Obituary

Eliza Moxley Jackson, long-time resident of Panama City, Florida, passed away on 3 October in Panama City at the age of 84.

Eliza grew up on a large farm in the rural community of Kibbee, outside of Vidalia, Georgia.  She attended Brewton-Parker College (1951), Georgia Southern Women's College (1952), and received her Master's degree from West Florida University (1980).  Eliza began her career as a home economist extension agent and 4H coordinator for the Brooks County Extension Service in Quitman, Georgia in 1952.  She remained in Quitman for 10 years upon which time she transferred to Bay County, Florida.

Eliza worked for the University of Florida Agricultural Research & Education Programs and the Bay County Commission Office for 32 years as the county's home economist extension agent.  A few of her   remarkable accomplishments during this time were: implementing the first 4-H council, developing a national award winning program for woman and youth on financial resource management, assisting and coordinating the judging of displays and goods at the annual Bay County fair, and sitting on the planning committee to develop and operate the weekly farmers' market at the Bay County fairgrounds.  Eliza received numerous awards and honors for her work with homemakers and special interest groups; most notably, the American Businesswoman of the Year and the distinguished Florence Hall Award from the National Association of Extension Home Economists. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and League of Women Voters.  Eliza will be remembered for her eloquence, quick wit, strong will, graciousness, and love for Southern cooking and entertaining.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Ruthie Mae Moxley Calhoun, brother, Bobby Ray Moxley, both of Kibbee, Georgia and ex-husband Royce Howell Jackson of Panama City, Florida.  She is survived by her twin children, daughter Carol Kay Jackson Smola (Raymond) of Okinawa, Japan and son Royce Howell Jackson, Jr of Panama City, Florida.  She has one grandson, Royce Jerome Smola.

Eliza's family is immensely grateful for Jana S. Wibberley and Hannah G. Davis, who both lovingly supported her through these final years.  The family wishes to acknowledge the high-level of concern and care provided by the staffs at Lisenby Retirement Center, St. Andrews Bay Rehabilitation Center, and Emerald Coast Hospice.  A private memorial ceremony is planned for her family.
