Dorothy Hawk Phillips, 73, of Panama City Beach, passed from this life on Saturday, March 12, 2011. Dorothy was born April 28, 1937, to Carey Judson Hawk and Janie Hawk Helland, in Chipley, Florida.
She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Preston E. Phillips; daughter, Paige E. Johnson (Michael) of Austin, Texas; son, Douglas E. Phillips (Amy) of St. Paul, Minnesota; three grandsons, Christopher Johnson, James Johnson, and Maxwell Phillips; mother, Janie Hawk Helland; brothers James C. Hawk (Elizabeth Crowder Hawk) and Gerald F. Hawk (Kay Hayes Hawk); sister Shirlea Hawk Caswell (Russell Caswell); nephew Jeff Hawk; nieces Shannon Caswell Taylor, Helen Hawk Morse, and Sarah Hawk Swafford; and her sweet Shih Tzu, Maggie.
Dorothy grew up in Panama City and was a 1955 graduate of Bay High School and a 1958 graduate of University of Alabama Nursing School. She loved her nursing career until she had her children and became a full time loving and devoted wife and mother. She loved gardening, reading, knitting, and cooking. While living in Alaska, she was politically active in mayoral, senatorial, and presidential campaigns.
Dorothy and Preston retired to Panama City Beach after 40 years of residing in Anchorage, Alaska, and attended Woodlawn Methodist Church of Panama City Beach.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 1-2 p.m. Those desiring may make memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, 4001 W 23rd Street, Suite C, Panama City, FL, 32405, in memory of Dorothy Phillips.
