Obituary

DOROTHY JEAN NEWTON

Dorothy Jean Newton went home to rest with her Heavenly Father on October 26, 2012. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Adolph Weeks (1954), and her late husband, Randall Newton, Sr. (1993). She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and cousin. She is survived by her six children: Jerry (Linda) Weeks, Gloria (Jimmy) McNiel, Barbara (Rich) Malone, Eris (Sylvia) Weeks, Randy Newton, and Tammy (Mark) Wilson; by ten (10) grandchildren: Jerry (Stacey) Weeks, Jr., Melody (Kris) Van der laan; Jimmy McNiel II; Artie (Wendy) Kimbrough, Greg (Jona) Kimbrough; Nathan (Allison) Weeks; Ben Weeks; Emily (Ben) Messer; Jordan Wilson, and Matthew Wilson. She is also survived by 24 great-grandchildren. To these children she was their beloved Mamaw, Grandmother, Grandma, Nanny, and Granny Newt and they so loved to visit her. Her sister Lincey Walls, and her brothers Clio (Jean) Adkison and Carnette (Ruth) Adkison as well as her many nephews and nieces will miss her sweet smile and gentle nature. She was preceded in death by her brother, Homer Adkison, and her sister, Mildred Wilson.
She was born in Coffee County, AL to Amon and Lula Adkison on August 20, 1925. After the death of her husband, Adolph, in Columbus, GA in 1954, she moved to Vernon, FL with her four (4) children to be near family. In 1958, she met Randall who lived in Panama City and he began courting both her and her children when he visited Vernon. They were married in 1960 and she and the children moved to Panama City. Two additional children were born into the family to round out the family of three daughters and three sons. Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas were always special times for the family as were the many family gatherings and reunions she so enjoyed being a part of. Everyone new she made the best cakes and no one could cook a roast, fried chicken, dumplings, or biscuits better than she could. No one ever left her house hungry.
Her church family at First Baptist Panama City meant so much to her. She was a member there from 1960 until her death and was very active until her failing health in recent years. She loved children and served in the nursery for more than 22 years. Francis Gilbert and the members of her Sunday School Class know how much she enjoyed their Christian fellowship. Her friends at First Baptist knew how she enjoyed the beautiful church hymns and how she loved to sing and listen to the sermons that lifted her up (as she always said).
Some knew her as Jean, some as Dorothy, & even old grade school friends knew her as Dot. But regardless of the name she was known by, everyone knew her for her Christian faith, her love of family, her kind and loving nature, her welcoming spirit, and her love of and caring for children.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Clyde Ellison officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 12 to 1 p.m. prior to the service.
We will all miss her more than she could ever have imagined. Those who have gone before her will be rejoicing to have her join them. Those of us left behind will mourn their loss of her but know she is at peace now. We love you momma, mother, mom, mamaw, grandmother, grandma, nanny, granny Newt, sister, and Aunt Jean.
The family extends thanks to the staff of Covenant Hospice.
