Obituary

DOROTHY HOLTSCLAW

Dorothy Holtsclaw, 92, of Panama City, passed away Christmas Day 2007 at a local assisted living facility. Born in Americus, Georgia on Dec. 22, 1915, Mrs. Holtsclaw was the daughter of the late Claude and Margaret Batts Worthy Yearwood, and the devoted wife of the late Virgil Holtsclaw.

Mrs. Holtsclaw was the first civilian secretary hired at Ft. Benning, Ga., where she met the man who would become her husband of 56 years. The two settled in St. Petersburg, Fla. after World War II, where together they ran a successful fuel oil business until 1966. They then moved to their "Red Dot Farm" in Trenton, Fla., and raised cattle. As a member of the Florida Farm Bureau State Women's Committee, Mrs. Holtsclaw supported her husband's years of work serving on the Florida Farm Bureau board of directors. She was also active in the Trenton Woman's Club. She was a true folk artist in several needlecrafts, and was particularly well known for making unique pine needle baskets, a skill she was proud to have used and taught for more than 80 years. After she moved to Panama City in 2000, she was happy to attend functions at the Bay County Council on Aging and taught crafts there as a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Mrs. Holtsclaw is survived by two daughters, Ann Cottongim and husband T J of Panama City, and Pat Brock and husband Rod of Jacksonville; three granddaughters, Anissa Cottongim of Alford, Erin Heston and husband Grant of Orlando, and Whitney Brock of Jacksonville; one grandson, Greg Brock and wife Dana of Orange Park; one great-grandson, Brock; and one great-granddaughter, Mary Olivia.

At Mrs. Holtsclaw's request, a private service will be held at a later date, when her ashes will be interred in her husband's grave at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. The family would like to thank the staff at Sterling House for the loving care they provided and suggests that memorials may be made to Emerald Coast Hospice, 2925 Martin Luther King Blvd, Panama City, FL 32405 or the charity of one's choice.
