Obituary

Donald Richard "Rick" Henry

Rick Henry, 60, died Thursday, August 11, 2011, peacefully in his sleep at his home in Panama City Beach.

He was a native of Atlanta, GA, born on April 19, 1951, to John and Louise Lockhart Henry. He was a bright and curious individual and always wanted to learn more. He graduated from Westminster School in Atlanta, where he received recognition for his political cartoons for the school newspaper. He was graduated from Vanderbilt University, with a B.A. in Psychology and Economics and a M.S. from University of Southern California in Systems Management. He served in the US Navy, with his last tour of duty being here in Panama City Beach, where he fell in love with the area and its sugar white beaches. Upon discharge from the Navy he had a house built and had lived here ever since.

But his love of the sea stayed with him and he earned his living as a boat captain working in the oil fields and on research vessels. After marrying his wife, Mary K. McGraw, in 1990, he decided he wanted to stay on land, and found work with the US Census Bureau. As his interests changed so did his backyard. It went from a volleyball court to a place where he could grow plants and build intricate walkways made of found objects. He was a loyal friend, always available to lend a helping hand. And, could he tell a story! He loved to write and draw cartoons and was working on a mystery story when he died.

He is survived by his wife, Mary K. McGraw, of Panama City Beach, his two stepdaughters, Mary C. Davis of Panama City Beach and Carolyn P. Davis of Lakewood, CO, his granddaughter, Hunter Kaitlyn Grogan of Lakewood, CO, his parents, John and Louise Lockhart Henry, of Evans, GA, his sister, Susan Henry Fritzler and husband Richard Fritzler of Roswell, GA, and his two beloved cats, Mikey and Moonsong.

A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Monday in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, followed by a Celebration of His Life at 6521 S. Lagoon Dr. All friends are invited.
