Obituary

Don Wayne Clemo, 82, of Panama City, FL passed away on Monday May 28, 2018. He was born on January 19, 1936 in Birmingham, AL to Joseph and Frances Clemo. Don was a retired Educator with the Bay District School system. He was preceded in death by his wife, Delia Margaret Clemo. Don is survived by two sons, Brad Clemo (Jennifer), Scott Clemo (Mary Marie); seven grandchildren, Jonathan Clemo (Lindsey), Lindsay Quirin (Scott), Drew Clemo (Elizabeth), Si Clemo (Katie), Rose Clemo, Sunny Clemo, William "Cubby" Clemo; and two great grandchildren, Emma Quirin, Campbell Clemo.  He is also survived by his wife, Mary "Sissy" Brown; grandchildren, Malayna Brown, Madeline Brown, Madison Brown, Manaen Brown; and great grandchild Oliver Brazier.

Don was a 1954 graduate of Meridian High School, Meridian MS.  He attended the University of Alabama (business) 1954-1958; received a Bachelor Degree University of West Florida (Education) 1981; received a Masters Degree Liberty University (Counseling) 1991.

He enlisted and briefly served in the U.S. Army during 1958.

In 1959, Don began a 20 year career working in the finance, credit, mortgage and retail industries for Beneficial Finance Company in Mobile, AL and later for Universal CIT in Panama City, FL.  In 1969, Don and Delia opened a franchised Western Auto Store in Callaway, FL.  In 1973, they opened the Family Firestone Store in Panama City, FL.

Don was instrumental in organizing and leading many local community service and youth sports organizations including: Chamber Military Affairs Committee; Parkway and Convention City Lions Club; Council on Aging; Peoples First Prime 55 Advisory Board; American Red Cross; YMCA; Boys Club; Youth Baseball Leagues (Little, Junior, Senior, and American Legion); Youth Football Leagues; Gulf Coast Baseball Officials Association; and Gulf Coast Community College Athletic Association.

In 1983, Don began a 22 year education and coaching career with Bay District Schools at Mowat and Surfside Middle Schools teaching History, Government and Civics.  He was recognized as New Teacher of the Year and served many years as Chairman of Social Studies Department.  Don coached successful teams in Football, Wrestling, Tennis, Track (girls) and Basketball (girls).  He also established the softball program at Gulf Coast Community College and served as head coach.

Don's faith led him to serve many local church and Christian organizations including: Board of First United Methodist Church; Administrative Board of Woodlawn Methodist Church; Sunday School Teacher.  He also served many years as Director of the Bay County Fellowship of Christian Students.

Don will be remembered as an avid Alabama Football fan and an enthusiastic member of the Emerald Coast Red Elephant Club.  Roll Tide! He was dearly loved and highly regarded by the students he taught and coached through the years.  Many former students have expressed their gratitude and appreciation for his influence and impact in shaping their lives.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday June 2, 2018 at 2 pm in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Marty Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5-7 pm, Friday June 1, 2018. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Bay County Boys & Girls Club in memory of Don Clemo.
