Clark Allen Whitehorn
Dr. Whitehorn passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 in his home. Born in Chicago in 1926, he grew up in Detroit. As a youth he became deeply interested in Boy Scouts of America, achieving Life membership and serving as a senior troop patrol leader. He was awarded membership in Order of the Arrow. He played tenor saxophone in the Redford High School marching band and in the dance band. He graduated magna cum laude from Redford High School in Detroit. Due to vigorous educational pursuit he achieved a full open scholarship to Johns Hopkins University where he studied pre-med and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He went on to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Maryland. While a student there he was a member of Nu Sigma Nu medical fraternity. His advanced surgical and urological resident training was at the Johns Hopkins and the Duke Medical Center hospitals.
He was a diplomat of the National Board of Medicine, Certified by the American Board of Urology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He served three years as urologist and general surgeon at Bolling AFB, Washington, D.C. with the rank of Captain. He entered private urologic practice in Winchester, VA, subsequently moving to Albany, N.Y., teaching at the Albany Medical College part-time and helping with a urological practice. He brought his family to Panama City in 1958 where he opened his urology medical practice. He practiced in Panama City for 33 years. He was a member of the Bay County Medical Society, the Florida Medical Association, the American Board of Urology, the Southeastern Urological Association, and the American College of Surgeons. He served as a president of the Florida Urological Society and was a member of the Societe Internationale d'Urologie. He was a member of the American Medical Association for 60 years and was invited into membership of the James B. Duke Society, Duke University, and the John Beale Davidge Alliance of the University of Maryland.
Dr. Whitehorn was a co-founder of the Gulf Coast Hospital in Panama City. He formerly served Bay Medical Center as a chief of staff and chief of surgery. He was a former president of Bay County Medical Society.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Brandt and 2 sons Clark, Jr. and Robert as well as his parents, Rex and Pearl Whitehorn. He is survived by his second wife Virginia Gunn Whitehorn, his grandson Clark Whitehorn II, cousins Sarah Esther Harper of Flint, Michigan and Milton Pollard of Lavonia, Michigan. Many thanks to his caregivers in his last illness, Glenda Sly, Mary Merriel, Barbara Langston and Tanya Barber.
Clark was an active director of the local Community Service Foundation. He loved his church and served 12 years as usher, deacon, clerk and elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Panama City. He was a long time member of Kiwanis Club of Panama City. He was an avid boater and was a member of St. Andrew Bay Yacht Club. He also served as commander of the St. Andrew Bay U.S. Power Squadron. Other interests included hunting, fishing, golf, gardening, music, theater, reading and education.
Clark Whitehorn was a man of great integrity, dignity and compassion and was well loved by his friends and patients.
Visitation at Wilson Funeral Home will be on Saturday, August 22 from 5 – 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, August 23 at 2 o' clock with Dr. Richard Watson presiding. Interment will follow at Garden of Last Supper in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
