CHARLIE E. DAY, JR.

1929 - 2008

Charlie E. Day, Jr., 79, of Panama City, went home to be with the LORD on Nov. 26, 2008. He was born in DeFuniak Springs, Fl on March 22, 1929 the year and month of the Great River Flood. His father, Charlie I. Day, Sr., had to swim the flooded 5 mile wide Choctawhatchee River to be at his wife's side, Colby Day, for the birth of their first child. He moved to Panama City Bch. in 1942 and then in 1961 moved to Panama City where he lived the remainder of his life. First a carpenter and then a General Contractor, Charlie Day was well known among the building community for his excellence in building and problem solving. An avid hunter and expert marksman, he hunted the local woods as well as places around the world such as Africa and the Northwest Territories. Later in life his zeal for the outdoors moved to photography and he delighted many people with beautiful pictures of animals and scenery. He was instrumental in bringing computers into the workplace back in the late 60's at Fleming Brothers Machine Works where he served as General Manager. He later established and owned Marine Wheels where he pioneered methods in marine propeller balancing and computer analysis. He was universally respected for his integrity, honesty and absolute attention to detail and innovation. If Charlie Day built it…it was right. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Julia Johnson "Judy" Day and brother, Edwin Day. Charlie is survived by his children, daughter Donna Day Thomas and husband, Mike; son Derrell Day and wife, Lisa; daughter Kimberly Day Kelly and husband, Ted of Sharpsburg, Ga.; son John "Jack" Barnett; son George "Rick" Barnett and wife, Sherry; daughter Karen Barnett Clark and husband, Dale; son Steve Barnett and wife Janna; brother Doug Day and wife, Judy; brother Bill Day and wife, Georgia; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and his companion and friend, Janet Glenn. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers those desiring to may make a contribution to Covenant Hospice or a charity of your choice in memory of Charlie E.
