Dr. Charles Langdale Nowlin passed away February 20, 2015 at the age of 94. He was born in Pensacola, Florida on March 29, 1920 to Archie and Elizabeth Nowlin. He graduated from the School of veterinary medicine at Auburn University. Following graduation, he entered the army veterinary service giving veterinary care to army and coast guard animals in Texas including the army's last horse-mounted Calvary. Overseas he was decorated three times for service in WWII combat caring for pack animals of an American Ranger battalion in Burma. He also saw service in China. Following active service he remained in the reserves and was retired as a lieutenant colonel. He practiced veterinary medicine in Panama City for 40 years.
He was an honorary member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, a life member of the Florida Veterinary Medical Association, the Military Officers of America Association, the Burma Star Association, and the Auburn Alumni Association. He was a former member of the Oakland Terrace Men's Club, Panama City Exchange Club, Panama City Rotary Club, St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club and the Panama City Amateur Radio Club.
He served on the vestries of Holy Nativity Episcopal Church and St. Andrews Episcopal Church. He served twelve years on the Panama City Housing Authority.
His wife, Mary Louise Nowlin, preceded him in death. He is survived by three daughters, Kathryn Bethea and her husband William of Pt. St. Lucie, FL, Susanne Mezzanotte and her husband Hugo of Raleigh, NC and Mary Jo Myers and her husband, Stephen of Panama City Beach. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Lauren Garren of Leesburg, VA, Allison Stanley of Alexandria, VA, Lindsey Horton, Alex Giglio, and Ross Giglio of Raleigh NC, Stephen Myers of Boston, MA and Jordan Myers of Atlanta, GA. Six great grandchildren also survive him.
Visitation will be held Friday, February 27 from 6-8 pm at Wilson Funeral Home. Graveside services with military honors will be held on Saturday, Feb. 28 at
1:00 pm at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 9101 Panama City Beach Parkway, PCB, FL 32407 or Gulf Coast State College Foundation, 5230 West Highway 98, Panama City, Florida 32401.
