Bunyon Cute Mitchell (BC), age 92, passed away suddenly on April 30, 2025, in Panama City, Florida, just two days after celebrating his birthday. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who touched countless lives through his work, creativity, and love for family.
BC shared 68 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Julia Ann Neel Mitchell. Together, they raised four sons: Jeff (Kathy), Paul, John, and Andy (deceased), survived by Paige. He leaves behind a loving extended family, including brother-in-laws Randy Neel (Rachel) and Alan Neel, sister-in-law Jean McElreath, and was preceded in death by brother-in-law Lawrence Neel. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Tillous and Mary Julia Mitchell and his brothers and sisters, Robert, Roscoe, William, Jean, Gerrie and Jeffie.
His legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Eric, Amber, Andrew, Amanda, Lauren, Peter, Carley, and Casey. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Adam. BC was blessed to know his great-grandchildren: Daniel, Dillon, Thomas, Brady, Emery, Halli, Elena, Reef, and Lilah.
He held a special place in his heart for his nephew Nathan Neel and close family friends Quinton Bendion, JoAnn Lauderdale and Cassion, along with several cherished nieces and nephews.
In addition, his forever companions Joey Fitzgerald Mitchell and Miss Kitty Mitchell.
A master of both practical trades and fine arts, BC graduated from the University of California with a degree in water and chemical analysis. He dedicated 68 years of his life to the plumbing trade, serving with distinction as a master plumber and pipefitter with locals 229 and 366. His expertise and commitment to his craft earned him deep respect within the industry.
Beyond his professional achievements, BC was renowned for his exceptional woodworking abilities. His artistic talent in wood crafting and bowl turning garnered such recognition that he was invited to teach at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. His pieces reflected both technical mastery and artistic vision, creating works that will be treasured for generations to come.
When not in his workshop, BC could often be found tending to his garden, where he cultivated a variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers with the same care and attention he brought to all his pursuits. Though he didn't get to do it as often as he would have liked, he found great joy in fishing, cherishing those peaceful moments on the water.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 11 am in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10-11 am prior to the service. After the service, the family invites friends to join them for a reception at the St. Andrew Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall at 12:45 pm. For those desiring to extend their condolences, the family kindly requests the gesture of sending potted plants in lieu of flowers. These living tributes will honor BC's love for gardening and his deep connection to nature, serving as a lasting memory of his vibrant spirit.
