Angeline Santos Whitfield, 92, of Wewahitchka passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2019.
Born March 2, 1927 in Chicago, Ill of Greek immigrants, her family later moved to Mobile, Ala. where she worked in her father's restaurant. She attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where she graduated with a B.S. in Home Economics.
Angeline began her 39-year teaching career in Wewahitchka in 1948. Over the years she taught home economics, junior high science and health, fourth grade, and ultimately served as the librarian at Wewahitchka High School. She sponsored a variety of student activities including coaching girls' basketball, junior high cheerleaders, and the A/V club. During her career, she also administered grants that provided educational opportunities for students and local teachers.
Angeline was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Wewahitchka. She was a former President of the Junior Women's Club and served as the city's mayor in the early 1980s. A talented artist, her paintings are displayed in many homes throughout the community as well as in the public library in Wewahitchka.
Following her retirement, she and her husband traveled extensively in the United States, took cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean and the Panama Canal, and visited Greece.
Angeline was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Alfred Layfett Whitfield;
her parents, Steve Santos and Dena Stavrojohn; her stepfather, Nicholas Batis; and
a brother, Timothy Batis.
She is survived by two children, Constance Dena Whitfield and Joseph Matthew Whitfield (Janice Hamm); two grandchildren, Joshua Hamm (Jessica) and Nicole Gill (Kevin); seven great grandchildren, all of Panama City; and two sisters, Mary McGraw of Sunnyvale, Calif. and Helen Steven of Mobile, Ala.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. CDT at the First United Methodist Church in Wewahitchka. Prior to the service, a visitation will take place at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. CDT.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish are invited to make donations to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 265, Wewahitchka, Florida 32465.
