We are devastated to announce the sudden passing of Al McConniel, or Night Al as he was otherwise known, on January 12, 2023. Al was the most wonderful husband, pops, son, friend. He was one of the biggest supporters of the community that he loved so much.
Preceded in death by Paternal grandparents Herman and Nellie McConniel, Maternal grandparents Noble and Georgia Hensley. Two brothers, Raymond C. (Charlie) McConniel and John Michael McConniel.
Survived by his wife Anita Hammack McConniel, Two sons, Justin Miner (Bethany) and Cody Miner (Megan). Two grandchildren, Glamdaughter Natalie Adams and his main little man Liam Hayes Miner who will forever know him as Pops. Mother and Father Raymond Charles and Brenda Sue (Hensley), Sisters Georgia Wilson (Daniel), Susan Meekins (Mike), Judith Hill (Chris), and sisters through love and friendship Janice Brady and Peggy Kirk. Numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends.
Music was not just Al's job; it was his passion. He knew that music has the power to bring people together. When Al was around, strangers became friends; friends became family. He played your favorite song and he knew how to get the party started. He got people out of their seats and on the dance floor. You could find him doing that at Newby's ("Mothership"), where one of his favorite things was to emcee Bike Week. His home, though, was Newby's Too End Zone ("The Curve") and weekends will not be the same there without him. The ability to entertain us with music gave him so much happiness. He considered it an honor to provide that happiness to all of us. "Loving a music man ain't always what it's supposed to be" - one of his favorite songs. Al knew he had an unusual schedule - no 9 to 5 for him! He often said how he was so fortunate that Anita stood by him and supported him so that he could do what he loved the most.
"Someday I hope you get the chance/To live like you were dying" Another of his favorite songs; he would even get out of the booth and behind the mic to sing it. And that he did. Al worked hard, but he played hard, too. On the rare occasions he wasn't behind his booth, you could find him behind his smoker or grill. Al was well on his way to becoming a Grill Master. He also enjoyed annual trips to Nashville or fishing Florida's coast with his best friends and planning gambling trips to Biloxi/Atmore with his favorite traveling buddy MJ. Al knew he was blessed with the best friends and enjoyed every moment with them.
Keep the heavens rockin', Night Al. Your music, your spirit, your friendship, your love, lives on in us. You are deeply loved and missed down here.
