T. FRANK SYFRETT, M.D.
Troy Franklin Syfrett, Sr., 69, of Panama City, Florida passed away Wednesday, June 20th, 2012 at Bay Medical Center. He had been a resident of Panama City since 1972. He was born in Marianna, Florida on December 5th, 1942. Dr. Syfrett attended Cottondale High School where he graduated as the Valedictorian of his class in 1960. He then went on to the University of Florida where he graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry in 1964. He attended the University of Florida School of Medicine and graduated with his M.D degree in 1968. In 1968-69 he did his internship at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in Charlotte, NC and stayed on for his residency in Family Practice. In 1971, the family moved to Ft. Rucker, Alabama where he served as a flight surgeon in the United States Army for 2 years. In the summer of 1972 the family moved to Panama City where Dr. Syfrett started in private practice with Drs. D.M and Powell Adams. In 1976 Dr. Syfrett, along with Dr. Wm. D. Chandler built the Forest Park Medical Clinic where he practiced along with Dr. Rush Akin until he retired in 2006. For a brief period of time, he continued to practice part time with Dr. Heather Shafer in her office. Dr. Syfrett was a member of the Bay County Medical Society and served on the board of Gulf Coast Hospital from 1986-89 and again from 1992-1995. He was Chief of staff for Gulf Coast Hospital in 1983. He was instrumental in helping to start the Medical Diagnostic Center and was Chairman of the Board from 1989-1993. He was a lifetime honorary member of the Florida Medical Association and a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Syfrett was a physician who was very devoted to and truly an advocate for his patients. He loved the practice of medicine and was very sad when he had to give it up for personal medical reasons. Dr. Syfrett was very devoted to his family and their well being was foremost on his mind beyond all else. He was preceded in death by his parents, Troy B. and Aletha Syfrett and his brother, Raymond L. Syfrett. His family members include his wife of 46 years, Patricia B. Syfrett; son, Troy F. Syfrett, Jr.; a grandson, Troy F. Syfrett III (Tripp); and his brother, James Ellis Syfrett; his nephews, Clayton, Adam, and Stephen Syfrett; and nieces, Elizabeth Syfrett Moore and Anne Syfrett. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Emerald Coast Hospice or to the church or charity of your choice in his name. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 25 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Panama City with a reception-visitation to follow in the Trinity Center.
