Mary Smith Davis


1922 – 2012

Mary Smith Davis, 89, of Panama City Beach, passed away after a long illness on June 13th at Community Health Center with her family by her side. She was a resident of Bay County for 47 years.

Mary was born in Washington County, Ohio on 29 December 1922 to Wylie T. and Golda Reed Smith. She was reared in Hancock County, West Virginia and graduated from New Cumberland High School in 1940 along with her lifelong friends Becky Vulgamore, Jean Turley, and Irene Cullen.

Mary is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Paul B. Davis, her son Richard Henderson, Jr. of Wewahitchka and his wife Mattie, her son David Davis of Lynn Haven and his wife Jo Ann, and her son John Davis of Jacksonville. She is also survived by her grandchildren Joshua Davis, Rachel Davis, William Davis, Cassidy Davis, and John Garnica-Davis, by step-grandchildren Travis Griffin and Melanie DeAnn Wilder, by step-great grandchildren Stephen Griffin, Jonathan Griffin, Kaley Wilder, and Walt Wilder, and by her close friend Katherine Riley. She is further survived by her in-laws Granville and Lucille Davis, Barney and Patricia Nation, and Crisler Davis all of Alabama, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Wanda Smith Derda, brother-in-law Cass Derda, and niece Linda Derda of Ohio, in-laws Dan and Rochelle Stephenson, and John P. and Wanda Davis all of Georgia, and sister-in-law Mary Lou Davis of Alabama.

The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, June 19th, from 5 to 6pm at the Wilson Funeral Home, immediately followed by a service. Interment of ashes will be at Pleasant View Cemetery in Graysville, Tennessee, at a future date. A celebration of her life with friends and family will be held later this summer in Panama City Beach. Special thanks to Drs. Todd Minga and Ashok Wadhera for their excellent care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Hospice, 107 W 19th Street, Panama City, FL 32405 in memory of Mary Davis.
