CLAUDE A. NELSON

Claude A. Nelson, age 80, passed away on January 10, 2012 at Chester C. Sims State Veterans Nursing Home, Panama City, Florida after an extended illness. Claude is survived by his wife, Imogene Nelson; two sons, Guy (Sue) Nelson of Tallahassee, Florida and Charles (Ann) Nelson of Panama City, Florida. He was also blessed with 8 grandchildren, Chris (Maria) Nelson, Eric (Kristen) Nelson, Patrick (Mary) Nelson, Jamie Smith, Joey (Danielle) Smith, Jimmy (Heather) Nelson, Robbie (Casey) Nelson and Kimmy (Ben) Snow and 4 great-grandchildren Dominic, Dillon, Dane and Beau Nelson; brother, Eddie Wayne (Ann) Nelson; and sisters, Maria (Terrell) Greene, Velia (Tom) Moore, and Linda (Ron) Proto. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years and the mother of his sons, Edith Grace Nelson; parents, Crofford and Vera Nelson; brothers, Julian Nelson, Kenneth Nelson; and sisters, Reba Nelson and Mavis Nelson. Claude was a 20 year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1948 and serving until 1968. He earned several awards and decorations, including the Army and the Air Force Good Conduct Medals, the Army Occupation Medal (Japan), the Korean and Vietnam Service Medals, and the United Nations Service Medal. Claude began his career in the military as a Firefighter and later became an Air Traffic Controller, serving in this position until his retirement from the Air Force. Claude worked in several different fields after his retirement from the military, including the State of Florida Forestry Service, and as an Air Traffic Controller in Thule, Greenland, before finally retiring in 1998. Claude was a member of the Mason’s for 55 years. Claude also loved watching the Atlanta Braves and the Florida State Seminoles. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Liaqat Hayat, the Nurses at Bay Medical Center, Chester C. Sims State Veterans Nursing Home and Father Peter Zalewski of St. Dominic Catholic Church. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 2:00 pm until 3:30 pm at the Wilson Funeral Home. Claude’s ashes will be interred in a family plot at Oakland Cemetery, 11th Street and Balboa Ave., Panama City, Florida. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Covenant Hospice, 107 W 19th Street, Panama City, FL 32405 or to a charity of your choice in Claude’s name.
